J.Period ft. Black Thought, Posdnuos, Pharoahe Monch & Joss Stone – Rise Up!

J. Period links up with a trio of lyrical legends for “Rise Up!,” a new anthem for the resistance that features Black Thought De La Soul’s Posdnuos and Pharoahe Monch. Joss Stone also contributes vocals and Period tells Rolling Stone that the song was in part inspired by the success of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s Hamilton and its accompanying mixtape, which he also worked on. He explains:
“I felt that if we could create compelling music around these issues issues, we might help light a similar fire in listeners.””These are turbulent times in America, with protests and marches spilling out into the streets in record numbers, and activism on the rise. ‘Rise Up’ was born out of that same energy”

Troy Ave - I Ain't Mad At Cha

A week or so ago, Troy Ave found himself engaged in controversy following an interview with The Breakfast Club, when the Brooklyn rapper shamelessly dubbed himself “NewPac.” The left-handed compliment definitely left a bad taste and vexed many Pac and rap fans, and it didn’t help when Boosie fanned the flames by deciding to call his next album BooPac. Troy is moving forward with his Nupac mixtape (which has been reportedly delayed), much to the chagrin of those whom opposed the idea, and drops by with the project’s latest offering, the ironically titled “I Ain’t Mad At Cha.”

Kendrick Lamar Releases His New LP DAMN

Kung-Fu Kenny is back!!! Following his warning to the world that (ya’ll) had until April 7th to get (your) sh*t together, Kendrick Lamar delivers his fourth studio album DAMN. Lead by the already successful single “HUMBLE”, we didn’t know for sure that this album was actually coming until this time last week. With only the vague comments he made to the New York Times Magazine last month, and a few snippets shared by Lebron James on Thursday, where K.Dot was going with this project was anybody’s guess. During that interview with the Times, he indicated that the album would be urgent, spiritual and centered on community, his own and others like it around the globe.

He also offered the analogy of a protective father accepting and embracing the choices of his grown daughter: “Learning to accept it, and not run away from it, that’s how I want this album to feel.” Over the last few days we’ve also learned that Rihanna, U2 and LA singer Zacari are the only three guests, and the contributing producers and musicians include Mike WiLL Made-It, Alchemist, DJ Dahi, Sounwave, and BADBADNOTGOOD.

The album ended up leaking a few hours ago and if you haven’t had the pleasure yet, you should stop reading now and press play below immediately. Over the course of 14-tracks, Kendrick does indeed achieve that urgency and spirituality he was talking about. He’s as on point lyrically as ever and he absolutely brutalizes some of these beats, while gently slapping around others. I wouldn’t usually opine on an album after just one listen, but I honestly don’t believe there is a wack song on this. The opening track, “DNA,” is just as fire as advertised. “Element” and “Pride” are two personal standouts to me, and the sequence of “Lust,” “Love” and “XXX” are as good of a three track run as I’ve heard on an album in the last year. “Fear” is simply epic. And just wait until you get to the final verse of “Duckworth”. My goodness.

Stream DAMN below now.

Talib Kweli & Styles P Drop The Seven EP

start recognizing your privileges, before they start weaponizing these lyricists

Talib Kweli and Styles P, two of our wisest and most respected OG’s, come together for their new project, The Seven. America has been filthy with racism since its inception, but we’re living through a real renaissance of vile bigotry at the moment, and I don’t think there’s a Rap fan living who wasn’t expecting these guys to speak up. The duo drop gem after shiny gem on tracks like “Brown Guys”, which features a Kweli verse that feels like it could’ve been assembled from any number of the deadly tweets he fires off daily, and the visceral “In The Field,” a 5-minute long discourse full of ether for AmeriKKKa. This whole project is full of insane verses and guests Jadakiss, Sheek Louch, NIKO IS, Rapsody and Common all come as correct as you would expect.

Stream The Seven below or look for the album on your preferred service now.

We’re several hours away from the release of Kendrick Lamar’s mysterious new album DAMN and while we’ve learned some more about it from the production credits and tracklist that surfaced this week, we haven’t really heard much other than the single “HUMBLE”. Nas tells of the nights of the living dustheads that those of us who lived through the late 70’s and early 80’s remember on “Angel Dust”, a new song from the soundtrack to the second season of Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series The Get Down. I haven’t checked out these new episodes yet, but I understand they include a greater focus on the drug epidemics that coincided with the early days of Hip-Hop in New York City.

Kendrick Lamar’s New Album is Called DAMN, Here’s the Tracklist

As it turns out, Kendrick Lamar’s new project is not called ALBUM, that title was just a placeholder for the LP’s iTunes pre-order page, as I suspected it might be. Joey Bada$$' All AmeriKKKan Bad A$$ Album is Here!

Joey Bada$$ is back with his sophomore album, All AmeriKKKan Bad A$$, a 12-track offering that is lushly produced and filled with purpose. Nearly every track, with a couple of notable exceptions, serves a paragraph in Joey’s letter to America on behalf of the African-American diaspora. He tackles everything from police brutality to inequality and while those are of course very heavy topics, the musicality and his flow ensure the project never gets boring. Including guest appearances from Styles P, J. Cole, ScHoolBoy Q and several of his Pro Era brothers, AABA is a very solid entry in this young man’s catalog.
