Joe Budden is back this week with episode 11 of I’ll Name This Podcast Later.
Joe, Marisa, Rory, and our guest, super engineer, Parks, sit and discuss Mayweather/Pacquiao (with a special guest call in from rapper/boxing expert Royce Da 5’9), Bamonte Jones calling “Life After Death” the most overrated album of all time, and Joe challenges Rosenberg on his producer work for this podcast. Was Jay-Z just tweeting through it? Is it too early to call Tidal a failure? Who is it over for?
According to the TIDAL site, Jay will be performing a number of obscure album cuts and exclusives that he pretty much never incorporates into his shows. In order to win tickets, you must first be a TIDAL user, then you must put together and promote a playlist on social media using the hashtag #TIDALXJAYZ.
Obviously there’s nothing wrong with offering exclusive content to paying consumers of a service, but damn Jay. I want to go to this, but I don’t need or want a TIDAL account. Since its relaunch last month, TIDAL has come under fire for a number of reasons, from the steep price of the service, to the insinuation that fans should pay more for music on one service because it will enrich an already wealthy group of artists. The position of the app in the Apple App Store has been held up as proof that the service is a failure, prompting Jay to take to social media this past weekend to defend his investment.
While I have my own issues with this service, I don’t neccessarily think it’s fair to say that it’s a failure after one month. It’s basically still in its infancy and there are alot of things they can do to make it more attractive and fair to users. Whether or not they will do those things remains to be seen. That being said, putting music videos behind a paywall is one of the lamest things you can do on the internet in 2015. And I say that as a fan of Jay Z, not as a blogger who needs content for his site (but really, that too). My point is, the internet is about democratizing content and making fans lives easier, not creating these walled gardens and shutting people out. So how do you do that and still make money? In this particular case, I honestly don’t know, but I don’t own a streaming service.

Back in 2013 when Jay was recording the Magna Carta Holy Grail album,
a picture of him and Raekwon in the studio surfaced on Instagram and lead
to all sorts of salivation and speculation over what the pair could possibly have
up their sleeves. Alas, the album dropeed and Rae was nowhere to be found.
In this recent chat with AllHipHop, Rae reveals that Jay originally wanted both
him and Ghostface on the track “Heaven” and when that couldn’t happen
because of logistical issues, Jay made an executive decision.

Here’s the excerpt:
A kid on the Internet pointed out that Section.80 is outlined like a book; good kid, m.A.A.d city like a film; and To Pimp A Butterfly like a poem. Is that how you see it and was that planned?
Yeah, definitely. [There]’s actually a sketch of braille that’s added to the title hidden inside the [CD] booklet that I don’t think nobody has caught yet. You can actually feel the bump lines. But if you can see it, which is the irony of it, you can break down the actual full title of the album.
That’s dope. You told MTV that the original title was going to be 2 Pimp A Caterpillar, since the acronym would be 2.P.A.C. Why did you change it?
Well, I just liked the contrast. These are things that I think a long time about. Everything is intricate. I wouldn’t say intricate, but it’s important for me. It was something about “butterfly,” how soft it sounds, and how hard “pimp” sounds. It was just the contrast. That’s how my music is. It’s a roller coaster. It’s cohesive enough, but it’s up and down. You’re going through these different emotions, and I wanted [the title] to reflect that.
Produced by J57.

Thought it was time to dig back into the archives and pull something that was fitting to the emotion of the people. The subject matter never changes in these types of songs until the condition changes in our neighborhoods across the world, even then it will be a historic memory in our lives reflected in songs forever. Sometimes the frustration of injustice just grabs you by the heart and squeezes and you just want to scream "CAN I GET A BREAK?!?!? Where are the leaders that want to really help and not just line their pockets? Let's not destroy our own communities but stand strong and protect the seniors and babies. Enjoy.
